  • I. Purpose and Scope of Application
    This method is suitable for determining the fraction content of liquid petroleum asphalt materials. As needed, the residue can be subjected to various tests, including penetration, viscosity, ductility, and floatability. Unless otherwise specified, when the altitude is at sea level, the standard distillation cut-off temperatures for each fraction are 225°C, 316°C, and 360°C.

    Instrument and Material Technical Requirements
    1. Distillation flask
    2. Guide Tube: Made of glass (approximately 1 mm thick), horn-shaped, with a bending angle of about 105°C. The inner diameter of the larger end is about 18 mm, while the smaller end has an inner diameter of at least 5 mm.

    3. Condenser Pipe
    4. Adjustable Heating Furnace
    5. Iron stands: Two in total— one equipped with an iron ring for supporting the distillation flask and insulation cover, and the other fitted with an iron clamp to hold the condenser in place.
    6. Graduated cylinder: 100 mL, with markings every 0.5 mL.
    7. Thermometer: Measuring range 0–360°C, graduation interval 1°C.
    8. Other: Residual sample containers, cork stoppers, or rubber stoppers, etc.

    III. Methods and Steps
    Preparation Work
    1.1 Wash and dry the distillation flask, condenser, delivery tube, and measuring cylinder thoroughly.
    1.2 After heating and thoroughly stirring the sample, carefully pour it into a pre-weighed distilled flask (m1), ensuring its mass corresponds to 200 mL when converted based on density. If the sample contains more than 2% water, take a sample whose mass is equivalent to 100 mL in volume.

    1.3 The liquid petroleum asphalt apparatus is shown in Figure T0632-1. First, place two layers of wire mesh onto the iron ring of the stand or the heating device, and then position the insulating cover on top of them. Next, insert the thermometer into the perforated cork of the distillation flask and securely seal the flask’s mouth with either a cork or a rubber stopper. Ensure that, after inserting the thermometer into the sample, its mercury bulb sits approximately 6–7 mm above the bottom of the distillation flask. Once the thermometer is properly installed, carefully set the distillation flask vertically inside the insulating cover and close the cover tightly with its top lid. Connect the side arm of the distillation flask to the condenser using a cork, ensuring that about 25–50 mm of the condenser tube is inserted into the flask—but avoid letting the walls of the two tubes come into contact—and keep the condenser aligned parallel to the axis of the distillation flask. At the lower end of the condenser, attach a cork to connect it to the delivery tube, positioning the angled end so that it extends at least 25 mm into the graduated cylinder, but never below the 100 mL mark. To prevent loss of the distilled fractions, you may cover the graduated cylinder with a piece of cardboard or wood, making sure to punch a hole large enough for the lower end of the delivery tube to pass through. After assembling all components as described, connect water supply to the outer jacket of the condenser, allowing water to flow in from the bottom of the condenser and out from the top.
