Uses
The paint film grid cutter is designed and manufactured in accordance with ISO 2409–1974. It is primarily used for determining the adhesion of organic coatings using the grid test method. It is suitable not only for laboratory use but also for construction sites under various conditions.
Working Principle and Scope of Application
The instrument uses tools of a specified size to cut and penetrate the coating in a grid pattern. The completed grid pattern is classified into six levels to assess the coating’s resistance to delamination from the substrate.
The grid cutter comes in three specifications with multi‑bladed cutting blades spaced at 1 mm, 2 mm, and 3 mm, allowing users to select the appropriate blade based on different test conditions. The 1 mm–spaced multi‑bladed cutter is suitable for test specimens with coating thicknesses less than 60 µm; the 2 mm–spaced multi‑bladed cutter is ideal for specimens with coating thicknesses ranging from 60 to 120 µm; and the 3 mm–spaced blade cutter is designed for specialized applications. Test specimens should be based on steel, tinplate, aluminum, or glass.
Technical Indicators
1. The spacing between the multi‑bladed cutting blades is 1 mm, 2 mm, and 3 mm, respectively.
2. The straightness of the cutting edge tops of multi‑tooth cutting blades shall be: ≤0.006 mm, ≤0.006 mm, ≤0.012 mm.
3. Width of the working tooth tip of multi‑bladed cutting tools: ≤ 0.10 mm
Experimental equipment
1. Soft brush (bring your own)
2.3x magnifying glass (provided with the instrument)
3. Adhesive tape (bring your own)
Operation and Usage Instructions
1. Test specimens must be prepared in accordance with the provisions of ISO R1514 and ISO 2808.
2. Place the test specimen on a flat surface with sufficient hardness.
3. Hold the grid cutter handle and ensure that the multi‑bladed cutting blade is perpendicular to the surface of the test specimen.
4. Cut with uniform pressure, a steady, non‑trembling hand, and a cutting speed of 20–50 mm/s.
5. Rotate the test piece by 90 degrees and repeat the above steps along the scored cuts to form a grid pattern.
6. Gently brush the test specimen 5 times backward and 5 times forward along the two diagonals of the grid pattern using a soft-bristled brush.
7. The test shall be conducted at at least three different locations on the test specimen. If the test results differ at these three locations, the test should be repeated at more than three locations, and all results should be recorded.
