  • Product Describe
  • This instrument is manufactured in accordance with the requirements specified in T0622-1993 “Asphalt Engler Viscosity Test (Engler Viscometer Method)” of the Industry Standard JTG E20-2011 “Test Procedures for Asphalt and Asphalt Mixtures in Highway Engineering” issued by the People’s Republic of China, as well as GB/T 266 “Determination of Engler Viscosity of Petroleum Products” and the Shanghai Municipal Enterprise Standard Q/YXYY11 “WNE-1A Engler Viscometer.” It is suitable for determining the Engler viscosity of asphalt or other petroleum products, which is defined as the ratio of the time (in seconds) required for a specified volume of the sample to flow out of an Engler viscometer under specified temperature and volume conditions to the time (in seconds) required for distilled water to flow out at 25°C. The unit of Engler viscosity is the Engler degree.
Note: This method is specifically intended for asphalt testing; when testing other petroleum products, the distillation water temperature and the receiving flask volume, among other parameters, differ slightly.

    Main Technical Features

    1. The instrument consists of a testing unit and a temperature controller, with a benchtop configuration. Both the inner and outer pots are made of stainless steel, and the inner pot has undergone special surface treatment to achieve a smooth finish that meets the requirements of the test.
    2. The temperature controller is a digital temperature control instrument with P, I, and D mode adjustment capabilities, offering convenient parameter settings and high temperature-control accuracy.

Operating Procedures and Usage & Maintenance Instructions

    1. Installation and Commissioning Operating Procedures

    1. The instrument shall be placed on a level, stable workbench free from corrosive gases. As specified in the instruction manual, assemble the dedicated tripod and mount the outer pot and inner pot onto it.

    2. Install the manual stirrer, the temperature sensor of the temperature controller, the Engler thermometer, the heater, the receiving flask, and other components in their designated positions, and then plug the heater power cord and the sensor signal cable into the corresponding sockets on the temperature controller.

    3. The instrument’s operating status shall comply with the working environment and conditions specified in the instruction manual; the power supply must have a reliable grounding connection, and the instrument enclosure must be properly grounded.

    4. Clean the inner wall of the inner pot and the outlet nozzle with aviation gasoline or alcohol, then wipe dry with a clean, soft cloth before reassembling the inner pot onto the outer pot. 5. Adjust the leveling screws on the tripod to initially level the liquid surface, then insert the cork rod into the outlet tube.

    6. Inject the sample, which has been sieved and preheated to a temperature approximately 2°C above the specified value, into the inner pot, ensuring that the liquid level is slightly above the tips of the three leveling pins. At this point, the sample level should be horizontal. Then, securely close the inner pot lid and insert the thermometer. Note: No air bubbles should form in the sample.

    7. Inject water into the outer pot (add lubricating oil at a temperature above 80°C), connect the power supply to the temperature controller, set the desired test temperature, turn on the power switch, and the constant-temperature bath will begin heating.

    8. During the heating process of the constant-temperature bath, the manual stirrer should be operated continuously while heating. Once the bath temperature reaches and stabilizes at the set value, continue stirring for approximately 5 minutes to ensure uniform and stable temperature throughout the bath. Note: It is essential to maintain a uniform and stable bath temperature; otherwise, the measurement results will be affected.

    9. Once the thermometer in the test sample has reached the specified temperature, promptly remove the stopper and start the stopwatch. When the volume of the test sample in the receiving flask exactly reaches the 50-mL mark (foam is not counted), immediately stop the stopwatch.

Note: The actions of lifting the cork and starting the stopwatch must be synchronized and coordinated; otherwise, measurement accuracy will be compromised.

    10. Perform two consecutive measurements, take the average of the two stopwatch readings, and calculate the Engler degree of the sample using the appropriate calculation formula.

    11. After each measurement is completed, turn off the power and thoroughly wash and dry the inner and outer pots as well as the receiving flask.

    II. Precautions

    1. Do not turn on the temperature controller to activate the heating element when the outer pot is empty of water (or lubricating oil) to prevent damage to the measurement system.

    2. Lubricating oil injected at temperatures above 80°C shall have a kinematic viscosity of (20–60) mm²/s at 50°C and a flash point of not less than 180°C as determined by the Cleveland open-cup method.

    3. When the ambient temperature drops below 0°C, drain all water from the sink to prevent freezing and damage to the components!
