  • Purpose

    The fiber oil absorption rate tester is used for measuring the oil absorption rate of fibers used in asphalt pavement for highway engineering. Standard followed: JT/T533-2020 "Fibers for Asphalt Pavement" Appendix D Oil Absorption Rate Test Method

    Usage Method

    1. According to experimental needs, weigh the corresponding mass of fiber and mineral oil mixture and pour it into the sample sieve on the instrument.
    2. Set the vibration time, plug into 220V, 50Hz power supply, and press the power switch to the "on" position.
    3. After the set time is reached, the instrument automatically stops and sounds an alarm.
    4. Turn off the power switch, remove the sample sieve, weigh the mass of the sample sieve and the fiber absorbed with mineral oil, and calculate the oil absorption rate according to the relevant formula.
    5. For the second test, repeat the above steps.

    Test Steps

    1. Take roughly equal amounts of samples from more than 5 different locations to form 2 fiber samples of 5.00g ± 0.10g each. Place the samples in a porcelain dish and dry in an oven at 105°C ± 5°C (60°C ± 5°C for polymer fibers) for more than 2 hours, then cool in a desiccator.
    2. Place the beaker on the balance and zero it, then put the dried sample into the beaker and weigh the mass m, accurate to 0.01g.
    3. Pour an appropriate amount of kerosene into the beaker to cover the fiber surface by about 2 cm, then let it stand for more than 5 minutes.
    4. Lightly tap and clean the sample sieve with a brush, then weigh the mass m1, accurate to 0.01g.
    5. Place the sample sieve above a container, gently pour the mixture from the beaker into the sample sieve, rinse the fibers in the beaker with kerosene and carefully pour into the sample sieve. Do not disturb the sample sieve during the operation.
    6. Install the sample sieve (containing fibers absorbed with kerosene) on the fiber oil absorption rate tester, start the tester, and after 10 minutes of vibration screening, it will automatically stop.
    7. Remove the sample sieve and weigh the mass m2 of the sample sieve and fibers absorbed with kerosene, accurate to 0.01g.
    8. For granular wood fibers, use the quartering method to take 3 samples of 5.5g ± 0.1g each. According to Appendix M section M2.1, perform hot extraction to remove the granulating agent, cool, mix the fibers evenly, then take a one-time sample of 10.0g ± 0.1g. Disperse with a machine for 15s ± 0.1g to prepare 2 fiber samples, and perform the test according to steps b) to g).

    Note: The same sample should be tested twice, and the average value taken as the oil absorption rate test result, accurate to 0.1 times. If the difference between the two measurements is greater than 1.0, re-sampling and testing should be performed.
