  • I. Purpose and Scope of Application
    This method is applicable for determining the fraction content of liquid petroleum asphalt materials. As needed, the residue can be subjected to various tests, including penetration, viscosity, ductility, and floatability. Unless otherwise specified, when the altitude is zero, the standard distillation cut-off temperatures for each fraction are 225℃, 316℃, and 360℃.

    Technical Requirements for Instruments and Materials
    1. Distillation flask
    2. Guide tube: Made of glass (approximately 1 mm thick), horn-shaped, with a bend angle of about 105°. The inner diameter of the larger end is approximately 18 mm, and the inner diameter of the smaller end is no less than 5 mm.

    3. Condenser tube
    4. Adjustable heating furnace
    5. Iron stands: Two in total—one equipped with an iron ring for supporting the distillation flask and insulation cover, and the other equipped with an iron clamp for holding the condenser.
    6. Graduated cylinder: 100 mL, with markings every 0.5 mL.
    7. Thermometer: Measurement range 0–360℃, graduation interval 1℃.
    8. Other: Residue sample containers, cork stoppers, rubber stoppers, etc.

    III. Methods and Procedures
    Preparatory work
    1.1 Wash and dry the distillation flask, condenser, delivery tube, measuring cylinder, and other equipment thoroughly.
    1.2 After heating and thoroughly stirring the sample, transfer it into a pre-weighed distillation flask (m1), whose mass corresponds to a volume of 200 mL when converted based on density. If the sample’s moisture content exceeds 2%, take a sample with a mass equivalent to a volume of 100 mL.

    1.3 The liquid petroleum asphalt apparatus is shown in Figure T0632-1. First, place two layers of wire mesh onto the iron ring of the iron frame or onto the heating device, and then set a heat-insulating cover on top of them. Next, insert a thermometer into the perforated cork of the distillation flask and securely seal the flask mouth with a cork or rubber stopper. Note that after inserting the thermometer into the sample, the bottom of its mercury bulb should be about 6–7 mm above the bottom of the distillation flask. Once the thermometer is properly installed, place the distillation flask vertically inside the heat-insulating cover and close the cover tightly. Connect the side arm of the distillation flask to the condenser using a cork, inserting it approximately 25–50 mm into the condenser; however, ensure that the walls of the two tubes do not come into contact with each other, and that the condenser is aligned parallel to the axis of the distillation flask. At the lower end of the condenser, connect it to a delivery tube via a cork, with the angled end extending into the graduated cylinder by at least 25 mm, but never below the 100 mL mark. To prevent loss of the distilled fractions, you may cover the graduated cylinder with a piece of cardboard or wood board, making a hole in the board large enough to allow the lower end of the delivery tube to pass through. After the entire apparatus has been assembled, connect a water supply to the outer jacket of the condenser, ensuring that water flows in from the lower end of the condenser and out from the upper end.
