Applications of the Slag Ball Content Analyzer
Designed and manufactured in accordance with the GB/T 5480.5-2004 standard for test methods of mineral wool and its products—specifically, the determination of slag ball content—this instrument can analyze the slag ball content of glass wool and its products, slag wool, rock wool and their products, as well as aluminosilicate wool and its products. Featuring a compact footprint and an aesthetically pleasing, practical design, it is an essential piece of equipment for laboratories.

Preparation of test specimens
Select test specimens in accordance with GB/T 5480.5-2004 and cut full-thickness samples weighing approximately 11 g. For glass wool and its products, incinerate at (500 ± 20)°C for at least 30 minutes; for silica wool and its products, incinerate at (700 ± 20)°C for at least 30 minutes. After completely removing the binder, reweigh the samples to an accuracy of 0.01 g. The number of test specimens shall be as specified in the relevant product standards, but shall not be fewer than three.
Compaction specimen
Place the weighed sample into the corresponding sample cylinder, then position the cylinder on the press and apply manual screw compression.
Wet the sample
Remove the compacted sample and place it in a 250 mL graduated cylinder. Add 50 mL of surfactant solution and stir thoroughly to ensure that the fibers are wetted and dispersed throughout the solution.
Separation test
Transfer the entire sample into the separation cylinder.
Open the water supply valve to set the rotameter reading at 60 mL/min, and maintain this flow rate until the fibers are fully dispersed and suspended in the water.
Increase the water flow rate to (120–180) mL/min and continue the separation for approximately 10 minutes.
After the water in the separation cylinder has clarified, open the slag discharge valve at the bottom of the cylinder and use the water flow to completely discharge the slag balls into a standard sieve whose mesh size does not exceed the maximum dimension specified in the product standard.
Inspect the fibers in the fiber collector for slag balls; if any are present, place them in the separator for separation.Dry
Place the sieve containing the slag balls in an electric drying oven and dry at (105–110)°C for at least 20 minutes.
Screening
Transfer the dried slag balls into a standard sieve with mesh openings specified in the product standard, add three ceramic balls with a diameter of (20 ± 1) mm, cover the sieve, and then start the vibrating sieve for 15 minutes.
Weighing
Place the sieved slag balls on a balance and weigh them, recording the reading to the nearest 0.01 g.
Calculation and Test Results
Calculate
The slag ball content s_h is calculated using the following formula:
Sh = m/mo × 100
In the formula:
sh—slag ball content, expressed as a percentage (%);
m—mass of slag ball, in grams (g).
m0—Sample mass, in grams (g).Test Results
The test results shall be expressed as the arithmetic mean, rounded to one decimal place. The aperture of each sieve opening shall also be reported.
Clean up after the experiment to prepare for next use.
