Uses
The rock point-load testing apparatus is a testing instrument used for conducting point-load tests on rocks and determining the point-load strength index of rocks. Based on the point-load strength index, it is possible to calculate and determine the uniaxial compressive strength of the rock, assess its anisotropy (i.e., the ratio of the maximum to the minimum point-load strength), identify weathering zones, estimate drilling rates, classify rocks, and perform other related assessments.
The rock point-load testing apparatus is a testing instrument well suited for use at construction sites. Point-load testing places relatively low demands on the preparation of rock specimens; such specimens may be core samples obtained during engineering exploration or slightly trimmed, irregular-shaped samples. No specialized machining is required for specimen preparation, and compared with conventional testing methods, point-load testing offers advantages in speed, short test duration, simplicity of procedure, and low cost. It can be widely applied in field tests for construction projects in geology, mining, hydropower, railway, and transportation sectors. In 1972, the Test Methods Committee of the International Society for Rock Mechanics formally recognized the rock point-load test as one of the methods for determining rock strength, and in 1985 the committee further revised this method. The rock point-load strength parameter has since been extensively adopted in China’s national standards and numerous sector-specific codes and specifications.

1. Features a horizontal design for convenient force application and excellent stability.
2. The reaction frame features a cylindrical design, ensuring excellent centering and eliminating eccentricity. Its robust and compact structure meets the testing requirements for high-strength, large-diameter core samples.
3. The jack is mounted on the cylindrical outer housing, manufactured from high-quality, high-strength materials, featuring a compact and rational structure, an aesthetically pleasing appearance, lightweight design, and convenient portability.
4. The loading cone is made of cemented carbide, offering high strength and long-lasting durability.
5. An independent electronic force measurement system is constructed using strain-type sensors and LCD display instruments, featuring high resolution, high measurement accuracy, and convenient reading.
6. Powered by a 9V rectangular battery for convenient field use.
Instructions
1. Prepare the test specimens in accordance with the requirements of the rock testing procedures.
2. Verify that the testing apparatus is securely and stably positioned, that the jack’s loading and unloading functions are operating normally, and that the spherical bearing between the jack and the pressure frame is properly aligned.
3. Adjust the central screw of the jack according to the height of the test specimen so that the bottom plate of the lower platen rises (or falls) to the appropriate height, then tighten the base screw of the jack using the jack’s pressure rod.
4. Place the specimen between the upper and lower pressure heads, select the appropriate loading point, and simultaneously apply load to the jack until the specimen is in full contact with the pressure heads.
5. Apply load to the jack at a rate corresponding to the specimen’s rupture within 10–20 seconds, continuing until the specimen fails.
6. The vertical displacement scale on the tension rod allows reading the change in vertical displacement before and after the test.
7. Specific test requirements and calculations can be found in the corresponding test procedures.
8. Upon completion of the test, loosen the bottom screw of the jack using a lever extension, then manually press down on the upper end of the jack’s screw rod to return the jack to its original position. Clean up the crushed stone between the upper and lower pressure plates and prepare for the next test.
9. The test pressure value is displayed directly on the LCD screen.
