  • Introduction

This product is suitable for measuring the water absorption rate and bulk density of natural stone and other materials. The instrument complies with the requirements for water absorption testing as specified in "GB/T 9966.3-2020 Test Methods for Natural Stone - Part 3: Determination of Water Absorption and Bulk Density." It is used to determine the specific gravity of tiles, concrete, aggregates, natural stone, and other materials by measuring apparent porosity and apparent relative density. Testing is conducted using a suitable electronic balance equipped with a sample holder hook. The lower part of the epoxy powder-coated steel frame is equipped with an adjustable height platform and a water container for specific weight measurement tests.

    Main Technical Parameters

    1. Balance: 5000g (accuracy 0.01g)
    2. Water container: 400*300*280mm
    3. Maximum specimen size: 150*150*150mm
    4. Height adjustable

    Water Absorption and Bulk Density

    1. Place the specimen in a blast drying oven at 65°C ± 5°C and dry for 48 hours until constant weight is achieved. Weigh the specimen at 46, 47, and 48 hours; if the mass remains constant, it indicates constant weight; otherwise, continue drying until a constant mass is reached. Cool the specimen in a desiccator to room temperature, then weigh it (m₀) with an accuracy of 0.01g.
    2. Place the specimen on glass rod supports in a water tank, ensuring a spacing of no less than 15mm between specimens. Add deionized or distilled water (20°C ± 2°C) to half the height of the specimen and let it stand for 1 hour. Then continue adding water to reach one-quarter above the specimen height and let it stand for another hour. Finally, fill the water so that the water surface exceeds the specimen height by 25mm ± 5mm. After soaking the specimen in water for 48 hours ± 2 hours, remove it and wrap it in a damp towel that has been wrung out to remove surface water, then immediately weigh it (m₁) with an accuracy of 0.01g.
    3. Immediately place the saturated specimen in a metal mesh basket and immerse both in deionized or distilled water at 20°C ± 2°C. Carefully remove any bubbles attached to the basket and specimen. Weigh the total mass of the specimen and basket in water with an accuracy of 0.01g. Weigh the basket alone at the same water depth with an accuracy of 0.01g. If the balance allows, directly measure the difference between these two measurements (m₂) with an accuracy of 0.01g.

Note: When using an electronic balance for weighing, as shown in Figure 2, zero the balance with the basket submerged at the same water depth to directly read the specimen's mass in water (m₂).
