Instructions for Use of the Soil Penetrometer

The soil penetration resistance meter is a new-generation testing instrument used to determine the penetration resistance of soil. It measures the swelling volume of cohesive soils during the soaking process and the moisture content after swelling stabilizes.

This instrument, based on geotechnical testing methods and highway geotechnical testing procedures, is used to determine the free-swelling of undisturbed and compacted soil samples, serving as a reference for evaluating the swelling potential of clayey soils.

I. Instrument Features: This instrument can efficiently and economically complete large-scale field surveys in a relatively short time, eliminating the need for the previously employed large-scale measurement methods that required substantial equipment, manpower, and funding.

III. Instructions for Using the Soil Penetrometer:

Select a suitable test pit location, typically within a 50×50 cm area. At one corner of the test pit, designate a measurement point. Place the penetrometer vertically on this measurement point, hold the handle firmly with one hand, and gently tap the hammer head into the soil until the base of the cone is flush with the top surface of the soil foundation.

Lift the hammer to a height of 30 centimeters, then release it to fall freely. Each time the penetration rod sinks 10 centimeters into the soil (as indicated by the scale markings on the penetration rod), record the number of hammer blows. The determination of the total number of blows should be carried out simultaneously at two diagonally opposite corners of the test specimen, and the average value obtained from these two parallel tests should be taken as the final result. In this way, you can determine the strength of each layer of the soil foundation.

IV. Precautions:

1. After each use, it should be washed and dried thoroughly.

2. Only authorized personnel are permitted to use this instrument.

3. During the experiment, you must not leave or engage in casual conversation with others.

4. It should be stored in a dust-free, non-corrosive environment at room temperature.
