National standard: Generally used for railways and schools.

Ministry Standard (Ministry of Transport Standard): Generally used for highways.

    I. Product Introduction:

The standard soil compaction apparatus is suitable for manual compaction of soil samples in accordance with standards such as GB/T 50123-1999 "Standard Methods for Geotechnical Testing" and JTJ 051-93 "Code for Geotechnical Testing of Highway Engineering." (The samples are used for tests such as the California Bearing Ratio test and the Resilient Modulus test.) It is used to determine the optimum moisture content and unit weight of compacted soil, serving as a basis for controlling soil moisture and specifying minimum density when constructing road subgrades and embankments. The compaction apparatus comes in two types: light-duty and heavy-duty. The light-duty compaction apparatus is suitable for cohesive soils with particle sizes ≤ 5 mm, while the heavy-duty compaction apparatus is suitable for soils with particle sizes ≤ 20 mm. When using a three-layer compaction method, the maximum particle size allowed is 40 mm.

    II. Parameters:

    1. Heavy-duty compaction apparatus

    Large compaction cylinder

    Diameter: 152mm

    Test cylinder height: 170mm

    Ring height: 50mm

    Pad height: 50mm

    Pad block diameter: 151 mm

    Displacement: 2177 cm³

    2. Heavy compaction rod

    Hammer weight: 4.5 kg

    Hammer base diameter: 50mm

    Drop height: 450mm

    3. Lightweight compaction apparatus

    Small compaction cylinder

    Diameter: 100mm

    Test cylinder height: 127mm

    Ring height: 50mm

    Volume: 997 cm³

    4. Lightweight compaction rod

    Hammer weight: 2.5 kg

    Hammer base diameter: 50mm

    Drop height: 30mm

III. Compaction Test (Light and Heavy Compaction Equipment) Method:

    1. Material Preparation: Depending on the type of experiment, different material preparation methods are used accordingly.

1.1 Dry Soil Method (Reusing Soil): Place soil samples—representative of the original material—that have been air-dried or oven-dried at a low temperature of 50℃ onto a rubber board. Use a round wooden rod to break up the soil into smaller particles, then pass the soil through sieves with different mesh sizes. For small test cylinders, use the quartering method to obtain approximately 3 kg of soil passing through the sieve; for large test cylinders, similarly use the quartering method to obtain about 6.5 kg. Estimate the air-dried or naturally occurring moisture content of the soil sample. If the air-dried moisture content is significantly lower than the initial moisture content, spread the soil sample onto a non-absorbent tray, evenly spray an appropriate amount of water using a spraying device, thoroughly mix the soil, and let it soak overnight before use.

    2. Test steps:
2.1 Based on the project requirements, select either the light-duty or heavy-duty test method as prescribed. According to the soil characteristics (including the amount of easily crushed weathered rock and the moisture content level), choose either the dry-soil method (with or without repeated use of the soil) or the wet-soil method as specified.
