Operating Procedures
1. When taking samples using a ring cutter, apply a layer of petroleum jelly to the inner wall of the ring cutter before cutting the soil.
2. After collecting the soil sample, first remove the topsoil layer of about 10 cm at the measurement point, then smooth the surface.
3. Place the ring cutter blade-down on the soil layer, and press the ring cutter vertically.
Next, use the soil-cutting knife to carefully trim the soil sample along the outer edge of the ring cutter until the soil sample protrudes slightly above the ring cutter. Then, use the soil-cutting knife with care.
Trim the soil samples at both ends of the ring cutter.
4. Wipe clean the soil adhering to the outer wall of the ring cutter, weigh the total mass of the ring cutter and the soil sample to an accuracy of 0.1 g, and record the ring cutter’s weight.
Number the samples and calculate their wet densities.
5. Take representative soil samples from within the ring knife—typically 15g to 30g for cohesive soils and 50g for sandy soils.
Place the soil sample into an aluminum box, close the lid, and weigh it. Record the aluminum pan’s number and the total weight.6. Open the aluminum box and place it in an oven. Heat at a constant temperature of 105℃ to 110℃ until a constant weight is achieved (generally, clay samples should be dried for at least 8 hours, while sandy soils should be dried for at least 6 hours).

8. The water content of the soil shall be calculated according to the following formula, accurate to 0.1%.

md-thousand-soil mass (g)9. The ring knife method for density testing shall be performed with two parallel determinations (for road engineering, three determinations are required). The difference between the two determinations shall not exceed 0.03 g/cm³.
10. The records for the ring knife method density test shall include the project name, location of the measurement point, moisture content of the sample, sample mass, and sample volume.
