  • Uses

The foam and rubber micrometer is designed and manufactured in accordance with GB/T 6342-1996 “Determination of Linear Dimensions of Foam Plastics and Rubbers” and ISO 1923-1981 “Foam Plastics and Rubbers—Determination of Linear Dimensions.” This instrument is suitable for measuring the thickness of foam plastic and rubber sheets and blocks.

    Main Technical Parameters

1 Micrometer Measurement range: 0–25 mm; minimum graduation: 0.01 mm
2 Pressure plate measurement Thickness: 3.8 mm; Area: 10 cm²; Measuring pressure: 100 ± 10 Pa
    3 Measure thickness ≤100mm
    4 Reference block 25 mm: 1 piece; 50 mm: 2 pieces; 75 mm: 1 piece
    5 battery 1 x 9V battery
    6 External dimensions 280×250×300mm

    Main Structure and Operating Principle

    The XPS foam and rubber micrometer consists primarily of a base (1), a switch (2), an indicator light (3), a test specimen (4), a measuring platen (5), a micrometer frame (6), a micrometer (7), a vertical column (8), a梅花-shaped cylindrical-head screw (9), a column-locking screw (10), a support bracket (11), and dry-cell batteries, among other components.

Working principle of the micrometer: The test specimen is placed on the base, and a specified pressure is applied to it by the measuring platen. The distance between the measuring platen and the base corresponds to the measured thickness of the test specimen.

    Instrument adjustment

    1. Adjust verticality: Loosen the two梅花 (flower-shaped) cylindrical-head set screws (9) as needed, and then rotate the micrometer frame (6) left or right or adjust it forward or backward to ensure that the micrometer is perpendicular to the upper surface of the base. Finally, tighten both internal hexagonal cylindrical-head set screws.

    2. Instrument zeroing:

    (1) Install the 9V dry battery into the battery compartment at the base of the stand.

    (2) Adjust the micrometer’s scale to zero millimeters (the method of using this micrometer is the same as that for a standard micrometer).

    (3) Place the measuring pressure plate on the base with its insulated side facing down, then turn on the indicator light switch.

    (4) Loosen the column locking screw (10). (Note: At this time, support the lower part of the bracket with your hand to prevent the bracket from dropping together with the micrometer and damaging it.) Adjust the bracket (11) so that the measuring end of the micrometer just contacts the upper surface of the measuring platen. At this point, the indicator light will show the instrument’s zero position; then tighten the column locking screw (10) to lock the bracket in this position.

    V. Usage and Operation

    1. When the thickness of the test specimen is ≤25 mm:

    (1) Increase the height of the micrometer’s measuring end above the base until it exceeds the sum of the test specimen thickness and the measuring platen thickness.

    (2) Place the test specimen, prepared in accordance with the relevant regulations, flat on the base, then position the measuring platen directly above the specimen, aligned with the center of the dial indicator.

    (3) Gently rotate the micrometer’s knob to gradually bring the measuring end closer to the pressure plate. When the indicator light illuminates, read the micrometer’s scale; this reading represents the specimen thickness, in millimeters.

    (4) Immediately turn off the power switch after completing the reading to avoid wasting battery power.

    2. When the thickness of the test specimen exceeds 25 mm:

    (1) Select the appropriate reference block based on the thickness of the test specimen to serve as the measurement reference.

    (2) Place the assembled reference block on the base, then perform zeroing in accordance with the instrument zeroing procedure described in this manual.

    (3) Measure the thickness of the test specimen using the method applicable when the specimen thickness is ≤25 mm. In this case, the specimen thickness equals the thickness of the reference block plus the micrometer reading.

    VI. Precautions

    1. When loosening or tightening the column screw (10), hold the support bracket (11) with your hand to prevent it from sliding down and damaging the micrometer.

    2. After each reading, please turn off the power switch (2) to conserve battery life.

    3. Take care to protect the measuring pressure plate and the top surface of the base; if deformation or unevenness occurs, they should be replaced immediately.

    4. After each use, the measuring anvil, base, gauge block, and micrometer surfaces shall be thoroughly cleaned.

    5. When the instrument is not used frequently, the dry-cell batteries at the base should be removed to prevent leakage and corrosion.

    6. After use, the instrument should be properly stored to protect it from dust.
