Overview

The rock lateral-constraint swelling tester features a digital dial-gauge readout and is suitable for testing axial displacement changes under lateral constraint in various rock swelling tests. It is equipped with a permeable plate, dial gauges, and other testing apparatus.

Operating Steps

(1) Place the test specimen inside a metal ring whose inner wall is coated with petroleum jelly, and position a thin filter paper and a permeable plate respectively above and below the specimen.

(2) Place a fixed metal load block on the top and install a vertical dial indicator; the mass of the metal load block shall exert a sustained pressure of 5 kPa on the test specimen. (3) Record the dial indicator readings every 10 minutes until three consecutive readings remain unchanged.

(4) Slowly add clean water to the water-containing container until the upper permeable plate is fully submerged.

(5) During the first hour, measure deformation every 10 minutes; thereafter, measure deformation every hour until the difference between any three consecutive readings does not exceed 0.001 mm. The duration of the test after immersion shall be no less than 48 hours.

(6) During the test, the water level shall be kept constant, and the water temperature change shall not exceed

2°C

During and after the test, detailed descriptions shall be provided of phenomena such as disintegration and spalling of the test specimen, surface mudification, or softening.
