  • Purpose

    Water Permeability Tester, finely processed with high testing accuracy. Suitable for determining the water permeability coefficient of asphalt mixture pavements and roller-compacted asphalt mixture specimens. Used to inspect the water permeability performance of pavements and the mix design of asphalt mixtures.

    Structure

    Measuring Cylinder: Made of organic glass, installed at the upper part of the instrument, with a volume of about 600mL. It is marked with scales from 100mL to 500mL, with a resolution of 2mL.
    Upper Plate: The organic glass tube is tightly installed on the upper plate.
    Connecting Pipe: Connects the measuring cylinder and the base, equipped with a stainless steel valve in the middle for starting and stopping the test.
    Base: The lower part of the base has a groove for installing the accompanying rubber ring.
    Support Frame: Composed of columns, serving to connect the upper plate and the base.
    Counterweights: Four pieces in total, each weighing about 2.5Kg.
    Accessories: Marking rings.

    Preparations

    Prepare a water bucket, water, red ink, chalk, broom, etc.
    Prepare sealing materials such as grease, glass putty, or clay.
    Prepare asphalt mixture specimens according to the procedure T0971-93 Asphalt Mixture Specimen Forming Method (Roller Compaction Method) (specimen size: 30cm*30cm*5cm) or select the test pavement.
    Add a few drops of red ink into the bucket of clean water to turn the water light pink.

    Test Procedure

    Clean the specimen placed on a solid flat surface or the pavement surface to be tested.
    Place the plastic ring at the center of the specimen or the measurement point on the pavement surface. Use chalk to draw circles along the inner and outer sides of the plastic ring. The area between the outer and inner rings is the region to be sealed with sealing material.
    Seal the annular sealing area with sealing material, taking care not to let the sealing material enter the inner ring. If sealing material accidentally enters the inner ring, it must be scraped off with a scraper. Then roll the sealing material into strips about the thickness of a thumb and stack them in a circle at the center of the annular sealing area.
    Place the water permeability tester on the measurement point of the specimen or pavement surface, ensuring the center of the tester aligns as closely as possible with the center of the ring. Then press the tester slightly onto the strip-shaped sealing material surface and add the counterweights to prevent pressurized water from leaking between the base and the pavement.
    Close the switch, fill the measuring cylinder with water, then open the switch to let water flow down and expel air from inside the bottom of the tester. When the water level in the cylinder slows down in descending, gently twist the air release valve by hand to expel all bubbles from the bottom of the tester. Close the switch and refill the measuring cylinder with water.
    Open all switches, start the stopwatch when the water level drops to the 100mL mark, and record the water level on the measuring cylinder every 60 seconds until the water level drops to 500mL. If water leaks between the base and sealing material during the test, it indicates poor sealing and the test should be moved to a nearby dry pavement for retesting. If the water level drops slowly and reaches the 500mL mark within 3 minutes, record the time taken to reach 500mL. If the water level remains almost unchanged after dropping to a certain level, it indicates the specimen is basically impermeable or completely impermeable, which should be noted in the report.
    Select 5 measurement points on the same test pavement section and determine the water permeability coefficient at each point. Take the average as the test result.

    Calculation

    The water permeability coefficient of the asphalt mixture specimen is calculated according to formula (1). The calculation is based on the time required for the water level to drop from 100mL to 500mL, or the volume of water passing through in 3 minutes can also be used.
    Cw = [(V1 - V2) / (t1 - t2) × 60]
    Where: Cw — Water permeability coefficient of the asphalt mixture specimen (mL/min)
    V1 — Water volume at the first reading time (mL), usually 100mL
    V2 — Water volume at the second reading time (mL), usually 50mL
    t1 — Time at the first reading (s)
    t2 — Time at the second reading (s)

    Report

    List and report the water permeability coefficient of each specimen point by point and the average value. If the pavement is impermeable, indicate 0 in the report.
