Introduction to the Rigid Foam Water Absorption Tester: This testing instrument for determining the water absorption of rigid foam plastics is developed in accordance with the national standard “Test Method for Water Absorption of Rigid Foams” (GB 8810–2005). It features high efficiency and excellent accuracy, making it widely applicable for water absorption testing of rigid foam plastics in manufacturing and scientific research.

Principle: The water absorption rate of a material is determined by calculating the buoyant force of a test specimen immersed in distilled water over a specified soaking period.
① Measurement: Testing shall be conducted in accordance with the standard GB/T 8810-2005, Determination of Water Absorption of Rigid Cellular Plastics.
② Test specimen: rigid foam;
③ Dimensions of the test specimen: length 150 mm, width 150 mm, thickness 75 mm, volume 500 cm³;
④ The ambient temperature should be 23±2℃, and the relative humidity 50±5%.
⑤ Water for soaking: distilled water that has been allowed to stand for at least 48 hours after distillation;
⑥ Cut the rigid foam into a 150 mm × 150 mm × 75 mm square test specimen. Place the rigid foam on the balance pan and measure its dry mass (m1) to an accuracy of 0.1 g, then record the result.
⑦ After recording, remove the rigid foam and reset the balance to zero; then fill the transparent container with running water to a level above the faucet; immerse the suspended mesh cage in distilled water to eliminate surface air bubbles, suspend it from the lower hook of the balance, and measure its apparent weight (m2) to the nearest 0.1 g, recording the result; finally, remove the suspended mesh cage and reset the balance to zero.
Note: When suspending the mesh cage on the balance, ensure that the cage’s circular disk does not come into contact with the container walls and is positioned at the center of the container.
⑧ Loosen the two set screws on the sleeves at both ends of the suspended mesh cage, raise the pressing rod, then place the rigid foam onto the four protrusions of the mounting disc and center it. Lower the pressing rod to press down on the rigid foam, ensuring that both ends of the pressing rod tightly engage the foam, and then tighten the two fixing screws on the sleeves at both ends.
⑨Re-immerse the suspended mesh cage containing the rigid foam in distilled water, and use a soft-bristle brush to agitate the cage and remove surface bubbles from both the cage and the rigid foam. After soaking for (96 ± 1) hours, suspend the mesh cage with the rigid foam from the balance’s hook and measure its apparent mass (m3), accurate to 0.1 g, then record the result.
